Frenchie Health Issues

The FBDCA has conducted health surveys (Health Survey Results) and the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA, www.offa.org) has a French Bulldog Spine Database, initiated by Constance Parker, (French Bulldog Spine Database) where you can read about the incidence of vertebral malformations in our breed.   A recent interview with Dr. George Keller, the veterinary radiologist who has been conducting this pilot project, can be found here.

Frenchies, like other breeds, sometimes have skin problems, often caused by allergies to inhaled substance (atopy) or to food.  Here is what you need to know about that.  Skin Disorders

If a Frenchie should die suddenly and unexpectedly, and you don't know why, you should have a post-mortem exam, or necropsy, done to try to determine the cause. The Value of a Necropsy

The French Bulldog is a breed with brachycephalic syndrome (their famous flat faces).  This carries a number of health implications. some of which are quite serious, sometimes deadly.  Others can negatively impact a dog's quality of life.  Frenchie owners should know about and be alert to these possibilities.  To read an article, About Brachycephalic Syndrome, and see illustrative drawings, click here.

You and your dog may be able to help improve the health of our breed.  For information about this, go to main menu Helping Frenchies and click on How Your DOG Can Help Frenchies.

Special Needs

French Bulldogs have special needs and are not for everyone.  Living with them is not the same as looking at them and admiring them.  See whether this is the breed for you.
